Bryn’s Beta Reading Service

Hi! I’m Bryn, aspiring author and dedicated Beta Reader.

As someone who has gone through the process of completing a novel, when I beta read it’s with respect and affection for the author I know is on the other side of the screen.

If you’ve completed the first draft of your manuscript, and you:

  • Want the beta reader you send your precious work to not ghost you.

  • Want actionable feedback delivered in a way that won’t tear you to pieces.

  • Want that feedback in a reasonable amount of time because showing someone else your work is stressful.

  • Need this feedback to not cost a quarter of your rent.

Submit your first chapter for a free review! If you like the way I give feedback, let’s work together.

A beta reader is someone who reads the completed early draft of your manuscript. Their job is to give you feedback on the story itself: the characters, the plot, the world building, the vibes. A beta reader will give you what is essentially a very early book review.

A beta reader is not someone who line edits or checks for spelling/grammar issues. They don’t edit. They review.

Wait, what’s a Beta Reader?

Where can you find free Beta Readers?

Free beta readers are available as volunteers on social media, but the main place I’ve found them to be is Scribophile.com. The beta reader database on this website is part of the paid membership perks, and it’s useful if you just don’t have any budget for beta readers. The drawback is that since these beta readers aren’t paid, they can ghost you (happened to me), give unreliable feedback, and take longer.

You can absolutely find good beta readers for free, but it takes some time and some digging.

If you scroll to the end of this page, you’ll see positive reviews from peers whose manuscripts I’ve beta read and given feedback.

My feedback is kind, but not sugar coated. If a scene makes me cringe, I’ll tell you. If one of your characters says something that sounds way off from the way you’ve written them beforehand, I’ll point it out. If there are sections of your manuscript that are boring and make me want to skim, I’ll be honest about it.

I believe that beta readers who flatter the author to spare feelings are really doing the author a disservice. I want to help you actually make your book better. I’ll give your manuscript my thorough attention, leaving feedback and suggestions as I go, and at the end I’ll give you my overall view of the book.

What writers are saying:

  • Riley M.

“Bryn provides the perfect balance between positive reinforcement and helpful critiques to help my manuscript be the best it can be. Her insight is valuable and thought-provoking, showing me aspects of my story I wouldn't have noticed otherwise! She also got back to me super quick, while still providing thorough comments to each of my chapters. 10/10 recommend Bryn's services!”

  • Beth J.

“I can’t recommend Bryn more. She was quick, kind, and deeply insightful from the very beginning. After a few back-and-forth messages and some small sample exchanges, I felt comfortable trusting her with my precious manuscript, which I do not do lightly.

    That trust absolutely paid off.

Her feedback was genuinely useful, and she helped me see both the strengths of my story and the areas that needed work. I came away from the experience with a stronger manuscript and a beta reader I’m very happy to recommend and will absolutely use again.

    Thank you, Bryn!”

  • Louise B.

"Bryn has been an incredible help with my romance novel. She is very thorough and not only catches the details but also keeps the bigger picture of the story in mind. She has an excellent eye for emotional depth, character relationships, and the connection between the story and the reader, and is very good at identifying where an emotional moment could be stronger or where a character’s reaction might need a little more development. Her feedback is always honest and constructive, but also encouraging. She doesn’t just point out what isn’t working—she offers thoughtful suggestions and ideas that help me see different possibilities and improve the story without trying to change it into something it isn’t. I’ve found her feedback extremely valuable and would absolutely recommend Bryn to other authors looking for a perceptive, supportive, and thorough beta reader."

  • Etta M.

“Bryn is genuinely one of the best beta readers I have worked with! Her feedback was incredibly thoughtful, perceptive, and thorough, and it was clear that she was paying close attention not only to the details of my writing but also to her experience as a reader.

She caught everything from small inconsistencies and confusing sentences to larger issues involving pacing, repetition, character interiority, dialogue, and the clarity of my magic system. What made her feedback especially valuable was that she never simply told me something was not working—she explained why it affected her as a reader and often offered a concrete suggestion for how I might strengthen it. She also noticed patterns across multiple chapters, which helped me identify habits in my writing that I would not have recognized from isolated comments alone.”

  • Kim C.

“Bryn has the wonderful talent of being both a cheerleader and an editor for a manuscript. She understands what a story is meant to be and sniffs out the points where it can improve, while she also honestly gushes about the good bits—and don’t we all want someone to gush about our story?”

  • Janessa B.

“Bryn was an amazing beta reader! She was incredibly fast, paid close attention to detail, and caught misspellings and other small errors throughout my manuscript. Most importantly, she was honest. Her feedback was thoughtful, straightforward, and helped me catch weak spots in my manuscript. I really appreciated that I could trust her to tell me what was working and what wasn’t. I would absolutely recommend her to other writers looking for a thorough and reliable beta reader!”
